If anyone can tell me exactly what this means, I’d love to know. This article states,
The bill, approved by Congress on Tuesday, is written so broadly it could make a federal felon of anyone who has even one copy of a film, software program or music file in a shared folder and should have known the copyrighted work had not been commercially released. Stiff fines of up to $250,000 can also be levied. Penalties would apply regardless of whether any downloading took place.
So, let me get this straight. You sign a contract with someone saying that person SHALL NOT distribute some material. The employee breaks the contract and gives it to someone, who then puts it up on the internet. And you’re telling me that it’s the END USER who is responsible and should be put in jail? If you have the right to go after anyone IT’S THE PERSON WHO YOU SIGNED A LEGALLY BINDING DOCUMENT WITH. STOP HIRING PEOPLE WHO LEAK YOUR MUSIC AND MOVIES! B-SIDES HAVE BEEN AROUND SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE TAPE PLAYER! AHHHH!!!!
Here’s a link to the text of the bill in full.
Finally, I’ve gotten around to disassembling my G5. So for all you users out there, this means the restricted content section is now and forever down! If you’re someone I know well, you can always IM me and we can probably hook something up. Look to vdov.net at the beginning of the next academic year … you never know what I’ll come up with.
For the edification of all you readers out there I will be off to Africa this summer, specifically Kenya and Tanzania. This promises to be one of the most interesting places I have ever been. My list of travels has been relatively limited compared to some people. I have a friend whose mom is an epidemiologist who spent her summer vacations when she was young in places like Nairobi, Congo, Shanghai, Beijing, and the like. She got me thinking about places that would be incredible to visit. So I posit this question: What are the places that you want to visit more than anywhere else?
My list goes something like this:
Argentina
Japan
Cuba
Jerusalem
Vatican City
The Madeiran Islands
Southern Spain
So what are everyone else’s lists like?
Now this is a very cool site. I think we should add some very esoteric science ones… you know for all the biochemists and analytical chemists out there. I am sure Costa can come up with some great ones for networking and packet analysis.
Just remember:
“To steer a warship onto a new course quickly, order the helmsman to put the rudder over full in the direction you want to turn. As the ship is turning, keep an eye on the compass. When your heading is 10-15 degrees from the new course (the exact number of degrees will depend on the operating characteristics of the ship), tell the helmsman to shift the rudder. This will put the rudder over full in the opposite direction, sharply slowing the rate of turn. Now keep an eye on the rudder indicator. When it shows that the rudder has traveled through its arcand is now on full position on the opposite side, order the rudder amidships and tell the helmsman to steady on the new course. This will stop the swing of the ship’s head right at your desired course in a quick and professional manner.”
I think we can all relate.

Hey there folks. I wanted to update everyone on a few things.
1) The restricted content section will live at most for another two weeks, possibly less. This is in preparation for graduation, as I take apart my systems to get ready (quite a process). So, if you use the restricted content section often, you have been warned. My website will be hosted here for the next two years … past that, who knows. My email will always be at vdov.net.
2) I’ve decided to go to Purdue to get my Ph.D. Purdue’s program is absolutely amazing, and I can’t wait (really, I would leave today if they’d let me) to get out of Bowdoin and get moving in grad school.
