HA HA [WIRELESS HOTSPOT REVIEW]

Site, Technical — afischer @ 12:28 am

So I am chilling here in Savannah, GA getting ready for my return flight tomorrow at 4:30 in the AM and I happen across acosta’s tidbit about being live from Starbucks. I myself am rocking the wirelss connection (from the wonderful people at Hawthorn Suites: a Hyatt Subsidiary) so I thought I might as well take a peek and see what I am picking up wirelessly. So here is the roundup from highest signal to lowest:
#1: HawthorneSuites (I am assuming this is the network put in by the hotel)
#2: Fairfield (My best guess is that this is the Fairfield Inn next door… I literally look at their wall from my window)
#3: ver625 (This is, in fact, the starbucks across the street… low signal from here but great from inside earlier getting coffee and reading some science)
#4: mcallenfamily (This one I only get intermittently and can only speculate that this is a family living the newish subdivision behind the hotel but the nearest houses are pretty far… I would be quite impressed if I was picking up that signal)

So thanks to Hawthorne Suites, The Fairfield Inn, Starbucks, and the McAllen family I have sooo many choices in wireless connectivity at all variety of signal strenghts!

I will be back to Camp tomorrow around midday. I know I pormised to post a review or something but have not. This is because I haven’t really seen or heard any good movies or music recenlty so I think it is time to take one that sucked and punk on it a bit. More to come

LIVE FROM STARBUCKS

Personal — acosta @ 1:12 pm

So it turns out that T-Mobile hotspots are really really secure :). Anyway here in Ossining, NY, chillin’ on a Mocha Frapp with my Mac. If only there were another Starbucks across the street. Hope everyone out there in vdov.net-land is having a great Thanksgiving.

THANKSGIVING

Site — afischer @ 5:21 pm

Just a littel note to the readers out there. Vdov.net will probably not be updated over Thanksgiving, seeing as Costa is headed for NYC with a side trip to Greenwich, CT. I (the one who actually writes stuff instead of just “keeping the site running” and other such bullcrap) will be headed for a MASSIVE family reunion in South Carolina. I will try to get some movie/music stuff up before then.

POST ELECTION

Site, World — afischer @ 4:49 pm

So now that we all know that Bush won and Kerry lost, what is the next step?

I for one am actually pretty hopeful. I think that the Democrats will be forced to look at why there is such a HUGE disconnect between the Northeast and enormous sections of the rest of the country. This could really do a lot for them. They will have to look at why there are staunchly Republican states, especially in the midwest, that end up with Democrat senators and governors. They will have to find out what those people (who have different ideologies in both blatant and subtle ways) want instead of ignoring them, or brushing them off as ignorant hicks, which is sadly one of pitfalls of Northeastern people in general.

I think the most important thing to work toward in the next four years is COMPROMISE. There are certain things that simply need to get done in this country (reducing the debt, providing affordable healthcare, and securing our country at home and abroad). What needs to happen is a rational approach to solving these probelms. Both parties need to set aside the more radical idealogies in their parties and get things done in a rational, result oriented way. Really we need to stop bickering and decide as an entire country that there are things we all want to get done/get fixed/get rid of, and then fid ways to do them. If a system works it shouldn’t matter who proposed it. The floor needs to be open to ideas for all of our politicians and their advisors. We need to stop the knee-jerk reaction to disagree with something simply because the other side thought of it.

That is my little speil.

I know this is a huge issue for a lot of people that read vdov.net (assuming anyone still does) so lets open up the floor. Questions? Comments? Let’s try to keep this civil and remember that Republicans and Democrats are all Americans and the end result is to make our country better. To quote John Kerry today, “America always moves forward.”
