CONGRESS DOES SOMETHING STUPID

If anyone can tell me exactly what this means, I’d love to know. This article states,

The bill, approved by Congress on Tuesday, is written so broadly it could make a federal felon of anyone who has even one copy of a film, software program or music file in a shared folder and should have known the copyrighted work had not been commercially released. Stiff fines of up to $250,000 can also be levied. Penalties would apply regardless of whether any downloading took place.

So, let me get this straight. You sign a contract with someone saying that person SHALL NOT distribute some material. The employee breaks the contract and gives it to someone, who then puts it up on the internet. And you’re telling me that it’s the END USER who is responsible and should be put in jail? If you have the right to go after anyone IT’S THE PERSON WHO YOU SIGNED A LEGALLY BINDING DOCUMENT WITH. STOP HIRING PEOPLE WHO LEAK YOUR MUSIC AND MOVIES! B-SIDES HAVE BEEN AROUND SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE TAPE PLAYER! AHHHH!!!!

Here’s a link to the text of the bill in full.

  1. So I guess that I should really make sure not to leave my CD’s lying around where someone might be able to get them and copy them. Because if I left them in a public place then who knows who might be able to do illegal things to them and clearly I would be to blame.
